The museum collection, gathered mainly during the 19th and 20th centuries, largely dates from the colonial era and is the result of collections, purchases or donations made by travellers, official missions, scientific expeditions, missionaries, administrative officials or private collectors.
The research began in the early 1990s, when several scientists (José Redinha, Marie-Louise Bastin and Gerhard Kubik) collaborated in the investigation of the anthropological collections, recognising at the time the ethnological and heritage importance of the vast collection with a view to its emerging dissemination, elevating it to one of the largest (un)known collections in the world. Reconstructing the logic of the incorporated artefactual nuclei was a provocation, but also a challenge and a test of persistence for the realisation of the project which, thirty years on, we believe has fulfilled its initial objective of giving visibility to the Ovimbundu material culture collections. |

O espólio museológico recolhido maioritariamente no decurso do séc. XIX e séc. XX advém em grande parte da época colonial em resultado de recolhas, compras ou doações efetuadas por viajantes, missões oficiais, expedições científicas, missionários, funcionários administrativos ou colecionadores particulares. A pesquisa germinou no início de 1990, quando diversos cientistas (José Redinha, Marie-Louise Bastin e Gerhard Kubik) colaboraram na investigação das coleções antropológicas, reconhecendo na altura a importância etnológica e patrimonial do vasto acervo tendo em vista a sua emergente divulgação, guindando-a a uma das maiores (des)conhecidas a nível mundial.
