| Whakarāpopototanga: | This book analyzes the appointment formats, selection criteria, and social profiles of the governors of Paraíba (America), São Tomé (Africa), and Damão (Asia) between 1643 and 1763. These actors were key agents in maintaining Portuguese authority in different parts of the vast overseas empire, and the decision-making process for their appointment was of singular importance to the Portuguese Crown. The central question to be addressed is whether the recruitment models for these officials were similar in the Atlantic world and in Asia. To carry out the research, prosopographic methodology and global and comparative history approaches were adopted, and the historical sources used correspond predominantly to the documentary collections preserved in the Overseas Historical Archive (codices and individual manuscripts) and in the National Archive of Torre do Tombo (Chancelleries, General Register of Mercies, Qualifications of military orders and the Holy Office), in addition to consultations with members of the kingdom's Council of State, scattered across various collections. |
