The resulting analysis offers a nuanced perspective that both expands and critically reframes prevailing conceptions of the “invention of the nation". |

Jahrhundert gilt als Zeitalter der Verwandlung. In Deutschland und Frankreich ist der Zeitraum von 1815 bis 1870 von vielfältigen politischen, sozialen und kulturellen Entwicklungen bestimmt, die mit dem Prozess der Nationsbildung zu tun haben. Der Fokus des Bandes liegt jedoch nicht auf nationalen Entwicklungspfaden. Vielmehr beleuchtet er, im Sinne einer histoire croisée, transnationale Verflechtungen, die Frankreich und Deutschland wechselseitig geprägt haben. Dabei wird gezeigt, wie sich die Prozesse auf vielfältigen Ebenen entfalteten: von Politik und Wirtschaft über Bildung und Forschung bis hin zu Medien, Vereinen und den Künsten. Auch prä- und postnationale Entwicklungen werden in den Blick genommen.
