Özet:Through a dialogue between the legal profession and academia, the volume marks the 150th anniversary of the establishment of bar associations, offering a reflection on the independence of the legal profession, which constitutes the primary safeguard of an effective right of defence and adequate protection of rights, and for which bar associations serve as the principal institutional guarantor. The contributions collected in the volume trace the evolution of bar associations through the various regulatory frameworks from Italian unification to the present, and address several recurring themes in the history of the legal profession, such as gender equality, education and access to the profession, disciplinary authority, and legal ethics, which have a significant impact on the role and functioning of the associations. What emerges is a shared reflection on the role of the legal profession within the legal system and on the challenges it must confront in order to adapt to increasingly complex contexts while preserving its core identity.
