description Sustainable development is an interdisciplinary challenge that involves the environment, society, and the economy. The United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), outlined in the 2030 Agenda, serve as a call for action for all countries. Fulfilling the SDGs grows more pressing, while the consequences of no action are becoming evident to citizens. Scientists and spatial data stakeholders worldwide utilize Geographic Information Systems and Cartography to analyze, assess, visualize, and communicate spatial and developmental inefficiencies in support of planning efforts and policy pathways that aim to achieve sustainability objectives. GIS are the ultimate tools for modeling, designing, and analyzing data relevant to sustainability processes at scales ranging from the local to global. This Reprint compiles research and technological advancements as to sustainability concerns that are implemented in several case studies worldwide. The contributions address some of the UN SDGs and cover topics that are closely related to sustainability, (e.g. urbanization, transportation, carbon emissions management, infrastructure, rural development, climate change). Although some progress has already been made, more intensive and collaborative efforts from scientists, governments, the entrepreneurial community, and citizens are needed to reach the ambitious goals of the 2030 Agenda.
