| סיכום: | The conference, entitled “Challenges of Contemporary Publishing,” convened by the Scientific and Technical Information Center of Lublin University of Technology, took place in Lublin on May 25–26, 2023. This gathering facilitated discourse among members of the academic community with a vested interest in the pertinent issues surrounding scientific publishing. Attendees included publishers, journal editors, librarians, and authors of scientific papers. The event provided a platform for representatives from diverse fields and publishing domains to engage in discussions about both traditional and open publishing models, utilizing contemporary tools such as Open Journal Systems, Open Monograph Press, and various authoring solutions.
The imperative to address topics concerning the application of publishing platforms, best practices, collaborative endeavours between editors, publishers, and libraries, and the exploration of novel publishing paradigms predated the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. During that time, the Ministry of Science and Higher Education announced a program aimed to bolster national journals to elevate publishing and editorial standards. This program envisioned the implementation of effective publishing practices to enhance standards and establish a robust presence in international scientific circulation.
At that time, the editors of scientific journals undertook measures to augment the visibility of their articles by submitting them to national and subsequently global indexing databases. The perspective outlined in the publication is only a thematic snapshot of the challenges facing the scholarly publishing community. Undoubtedly, many editors, publishers, and librarians will find guidance here to help improve their day-to-day work and to help pave the way for the further development of the publishing house or editorial office.
It is hoped that the post-conference monograph will bring the current perspective of scholarly publishing into focus and help to set a strategy for open publishing with infrastructural, legal, and financial solutions. It is important to remember that open publishing is only part of open science, but without it, open communication and education will not happen. |
