description This book brings together the most recent research on the influence of St Birgitta and the Birgittines in late medieval Finland. The Naantali monastery was a place of cult and teaching where both the mystical and practical aspects Birgittine learning were taught to the nuns through the reading aloud of religious texts, but also preached to laypeople by Birgittine brethren. It was also a place where nuns prayed daily for the souls that were in the Purgatory. For the sake of this service, the monastery received generous donations of land, images, and liturgical objects from the wealthy members of the local communities. On feast days, laypeople could witness solemn processions with holy images and relics and hear the nuns singing the officium of St Birgitta. From Naantali, the Birgittine spiritual, literary, musical, and visual heritage reached to the entire Turku Diocese. In this book, these phenomena are analysed from the perspectives of lived religion, senses and emotions, materiality, and fragmentation.
