| Gaia: | The use of chemicals in agriculture has increased productivity and controlled pests, but their improper handling poses a
significant risk to human health, occupational safety, and the environment. This book offers a comprehensive overview of
the safe and responsible management of agricultural chemicals, combining technical fundamentals, legal regulations, and
best practices for prevention. Throughout its chapters, the book presents a detailed classification of agricultural
chemicals—pesticides, fertilizers, herbicides, and fungicides—as well as their categorization according to the Globally
Harmonized System (GHS). Physical, health, and environmental hazards are analyzed in depth, addressing issues such
as toxicity, mutagenicity, carcinogenicity, and chronic effects resulting from exposure to chemical agents. Likewise,
methodologies for identifying, evaluating, and controlling chemical risks are developed, along with strategies for
prevention, storage, transportation, handling, and final disposal of waste. Finally, the importance of training, the use of
personal protective equipment, and the implementation of emergency and response plans is emphasized in order to
promote a culture of safety and sustainability in the handling of agricultural chemicals. This work is an essential technical
and educational guide for professionals, teachers, and students in the agricultural, environmental, and industrial sciences
who seek to understand and apply the principles of chemical risk management and prevention in the current context of
sustainable production. |
