| Summary: | This volume is the result of the important cataloguing and textual analysis carried out on the records of the Regia Camera della Sommaria – the subject of the PRIN research project – through a series of thematic studies focusing on the political, economic and social dynamics (at various levels) of the late medieval Southern Italy or of specific areas. Due to the ongoing dialogue between historiography and various types of sources (fiscal, administrative, statutory, notarial, accounting, iconographic, material, etc.), attention has been drawn to Mediterranean trade and commercial actors, including their financial activities; resources and supplies, between centre and periphery, roles and competences; lords, cities, communities – including minority ones – in terms of patrimonial, legal-administrative aspects, relationships and forms of negotiation; social dynamics, encompassing influences, preferences and changes. The hope is that we have highlighted certain elements that demonstrate the central – and at the same time complex – role of the late medieval Southern Italy in the processes of transformation of European society, between the Middle Ages and the early modern period. |
