Jahrhundert kritisierten namhafte Denker an Hegels philosophischem System, dass das menschliche Individuum in ihm entscheidend zu kurz komme. Diese Kritik prägt das Hegel-Bild bis heute. Ziel dieser Untersuchung ist es, die Kritik gerade nicht im Hinblick auf die seinen Kritikern vorgelegenen Systemteile zu prüfen, sondern im Hinblick auf einen in der Vergangenheit kaum beachteten Teil: die »Philosophie des subjektiven Geistes«. Mit Blick auf die subjektive Geistphilosophie kann gezeigt werden, dass sich Hegel intensiv mit dem menschlichen Individuum befasst. Er erörtert die Frage nach dem Individuationsprinzip, das Verhältnis von Individualität und Sozialität, befasst sich eingehend mit dem Phänomen menschlichen Ausdrucks und fragt nach der Entstehung personaler Identität.
