Die Studie untersucht Werkanalysen in deutschsprachigen Musikzeitschriften der 1760er- bis 1820er-Jahre unter besonderer Berücksichtigung ihres publizistischen und theoretischen Kontextes. Wie kaum ein anderes Format jener Zeit bündeln diese Texte den Facettenreichtum des Nachdenkens über Musik: Überlegungen zu Ästhetik, Theorie und Geschichte der Musik gehen in vielen Werkkritiken miteinander einher, die Analyse fungiert als Demonstrationswerkzeug für diese vielfältigen Beziehungen.
