Wer waren diese Flüchtlinge, die seit 1789 von den Revolutionären unter der Bezeichnung émigrés geächtet wurden? Wie gelang es ihnen, die Grenze zu überqueren und im Exil zu überleben? Welche Mittel setzten Frankreich und seine Nachbarstaaten ein, um diese Mobilität zu kontrollieren? Jort Blazejewski untersucht Motive, Verläufe und Erscheinungsformen dieser Gewaltmigration anhand zahlreicher Quellen. Die Studie eröffnet neue Perspektiven auf eine der größten Fluchtbewegungen der Vormoderne und deckt unbekannte Krisenerscheinungen des europäischen Revolutionszeitalters auf. Qui étaient ces réfugiés, mis au ban par les révolutionnaires sous le nom d’émigrés? Comment ont-ils réussi à franchir la frontière et à survivre à l’exil? Quels moyens la France et les pays voisins ont-ils mis en œuvre pour contrôler la mobilité de ces populations? Jort Blazejewski retrace les motifs, le déroulement et les manifestations de cette migration violente à l’aide de nombreuses sources.
