description This chapter explores how international labour standards have a tangible impact on the lives of workers. It highlights the role of ILO conventions and recommendations in shaping national legislation and practice, and when the work of the International Labour Organization (ILO) supervisory mechanisms leads to effective change. Specific examples illustrate the protection of the rights of seafarers during the pandemic and of migrant workers’ rights in Qatar. It shows how the development of ILO guidelines and amendments to a convention are based on concrete cases, moving from specific situations to international standards. It points out that drawing on the authority of the ILO's supervisory mechanisms, the targeted technical cooperation of the ILO Office and coordinated efforts between governments and social partners have resulted in a steady improvement in workers‘ and employers’ rights. It concludes that it is essential to maintain efforts and vigilance to guarantee full respect for workers’ rights and avoid regression.
