| Тойм: | This entry critically examines items measuring gender role attitudes in four major European survey programs: the EVS, ISSP, ESS, and Eurobarometer. While the use of identically worded questions over four decades facilitates longitudinal analysis of attitudes toward gender roles, the measures are limited in scope and increasingly outdated. Rooted in sex-role theory of second-wave feminism, they primarily focus on women's responsibilities in the public and private spheres, reinforcing patriarchal norms and deficit narratives. The surveys largely ignore men's roles in domestic life and fail to reflect evolving family structures, gender identities, and societal norms. As a result, they omit critical dimensions of gender equality and exclude non-cis, non-heteronormative populations. The authors argue for a shift in survey design that aligns with contemporary gender theory by incorporating more inclusive, balanced, and theoretically informed measures. Only by updating these instruments can researchers meaningfully capture the complexity of gender attitudes in modern European societies. |
