Beskrivelse
Summary:Political efficacy describes citizens’ perception of their ability to influence political decision-making and, like many other political orientations, it is gendered: Across various contexts, women report lower levels of internal political efficacy than men, while gender differences in external efficacy are weaker or absent. These patterns are shaped by psychological factors, gendered political socialisation, and exposure to a gendered political sphere. While existing research offers some important insights into the gendered patterns of political efficacy and the factors influencing it, it remains limited in scope, both methodologically and geographically. Most empirical studies rely on self-reported survey items, focus on Western democracies, and rarely consider intersectional inequalities. Future work would benefit from broader empirical coverage, more diverse methods, and greater attention to digital forms of participation, as well as current political shifts such as the anti-gender backlash. Understanding gendered differences in political efficacy remains important for explaining broader inequalities in political engagement.
