Church history History of medicine Legal history Lutheran culture Lutheran legacy Pietism thema EDItEUR::Q Philosophy and Religion::QR Religion and beliefs::QRV Aspects of religion::QRVG Theology Scholars of church history, interested in the interdisciplinary early modern history of melancholy as well as the broad themes of religious, theological, intellectual, social, legal and medical history. Melancholy held a flexible position in early modern discourse and clinical practice both as an idea connected to inner feeling and an explanation for bodily and mental disturbances. This ambivalence became a vehicle for developing debates about self-examination and salvation, while also pushing the parameters of what legally and culturally constituted mentally impaired states. These developments were born from the dynamics of the emerging differentiated disciplines of theology, medicine and law, but were also the product of the way ordinary people thought about and dealt with troubled mental states in Nordic Lutheran societies. This volume’s geographical and temporal focus allows us to not only grapple with the deeper specificity of melancholy and its ambiguity in an important transitional period, but also allows us to develop an interdisciplinary approach, bringing together scholars working with methods from theology, forensic psychiatry, church-, medical-, legal-, literary-, social- and maritime history. In turn, this allows us to integrate ‘top down’ and ‘bottom up’ approaches while also establishing national comparisons that expose early modern intersections across cultural and disciplinary contexts. 2026-05-20T06:11:14Z 2026-05-20T06:11:14Z 2026-05-19T09:28:12Z 2026-04-20 2026 book ONIX_20260519T105717_9783666502361_12 2198-3089 https://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/113032 9783666502361 https://directory.doabooks.org/handle/20.500.12854/176610 eng Refo500 Academic Studies (R5AS) open access image/jpeg image/jpeg Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International https://library.oapen.org/bitstream/20.500.12657/113032/1/9783666502361.pdf https://library.oapen.org/bitstream/20.500.12657/113032/1/9783666502361.pdf Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht 10.13109/9783666502361 10.13109/9783666502361 f0c96982-0af7-4ed4-af3e-e2461f2d12c9 9783666502361 315 Göttingen open access |
