Ausgehend von der ersten urkundlichen Erwähnung im Jahr 1276 verfolgt ein fünfköpfiges Autorenteam die Entwicklung des Dorfes durch Mittelalter, frühe Neuzeit und Moderne bis ins 21. Jahrhundert. Dabei werden politische, wirtschaftliche und gesellschaftliche Veränderungen stets im Zusammenhang mit den übergeordneten Entwicklungen in Schleswig-Holstein und im weiteren regionalen Kontext betrachtet. Im Mittelpunkt stehen jedoch die Menschen vor Ort: ihre Lebenswelten, Arbeitsbedingungen, Formen des Zusammenlebens und ihr Umgang mit Wandel. Ob agrarisch geprägte Dorfgemeinschaft, Integration in den preußischen Staat, Umbrüche der Weltkriege oder Modernisierungsprozesse der Nachkriegszeit – Heist erscheint als sprechendes Beispiel für die Entwicklung ländlicher Räume zwischen Marsch und Geest.
