description German-Togolese relations after 1960 are being examined in depth for the first time. In the 1880s, the Wilhelmine Empire established a ‘German Protectorate of Togo’, which was regarded at the time as a ‘model colony’. This myth persisted long after the end of German rule in 1914, right up until the 1980s. However, the nature of the relations established between the Federal Republic of Germany and Togo against this backdrop after 1945 has scarcely been researched to date. Stefan Seefelder demonstrates for the first time how Togo became a testing ground for development aid and an independent foreign policy of the Federal Republic in the Global South. Drawing on numerous documents from German, Togolese and Ghanaian archives, the author offers a well-founded insight into German-Togolese exchanges from independence in 1960 until the severing of diplomatic relations in 1993. In doing so, he highlights both the shared political and economic interests as well as the challenges and the failure of many cooperative ventures. Case studies on development aid, the infrastructure of the capital Lomé and Togo’s role in the East-West conflict deepen our understanding of the complex dynamics of these relations.
