Als zentrale Grundlage zur Erklärung der Identitätskonstruktion dient die mimetische Theorie von René Girard, um Zivilreligion und Formen der Akkulturation in Mehrheiten- und Minderheitensituationen zu erklären. Insgesamt ergibt sich daraus der Entwurf eines Modells der „Konnexion", das eine „multiethnisch-loyale" Solidarität erlaubt und Identitätsvielfalt mit geteilten europäischen Werten in Einklang bringt, um auf einer ersten Ebene kulturelle Vielfalt zu schützen und auf einer zweiten Ebene gemeinschaftliche Werte zu fördern. Gemeinsame Werte und Institutionen sowie kulturelle Vielfalt sollten die Grundlage für eine postnationale, universalistische „Identität sui generis" in der EU bilden. So ein Wechselspiel aus Einheit und Vielfalt steht aber auch konträr zu einem Super-Nationalstaat wie den Vereinigten Staaten von Europa oder eines Europas der Vaterländer. Die Transformation liberal-demokratischer Systeme in illiberale Nationalstaaten trotz EU-Mitgliedschaft zeigt, wie wichtig für Frieden und Demokratie die vom Autor fundiertest behandelten zentralen Fragen europäischer Identitätsbildung und politischer Integration auch in Zukunft bleiben werden. Joseph Marko, Prof.i.R. für vergleichendes Verfassungsrecht und Politikwissenschaften, Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz Eine postnational-universalistische Ordnung, wie sie die Europäische Union anzustreben versucht, ist ein Hoffnungszeichen in einer Welt der Imperialismen.
