Jedná se o Maďarsko, Polsko, Řecko, Německo, Španělsko, Česko a Francii. Mezinárodní autorský tým si v jednotlivých případových studiích klade otázku, nakolik vzestup populistických stran, kterého jsme byli svědky v uvedeném období, způsobil zvýšení polarizace, tj. ideologické vzdálenosti mezi stranami v dané zemi, a zda tato polarizace vedla k proměně typu stranického systému. Umírněné stranické systémy se vlivem populismu mohou přeměnit v polarizované stranické systémy, přičemž vysoká míra polarizace má vliv na fungování celého demokratického režimu.
