| description | International cooperation will be pivotal to achieve the objectives of the recently adopted international Agreement under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea on the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Marine Biological Diversity of Areas beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ Agreement). This chapter provides an overview of the BBNJ Agreement and focuses on opportunities for international cooperation, stemming from key articles within the treaty that concern area-based management tools (ABMTs), including marine protected areas (MPAs). Such opportunities include enhancing cooperation among relevant legal instruments and management bodies; promoting the aims of the treaty in other relevant instruments and bodies; and promoting cooperation in scientific research and the transfer of marine technologies. The BBNJ Agreement represents a historic chance in global ocean governance and international cooperation, and offers a means to close the implementation gap between multiple and diverse regional and global legal instruments in an effort to support Sustainable Development Goal 14 under the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. |
