20: Marine carbon dioxide removal: an emerging topic for ocean governance and the sustainability agenda
In recent years, the ocean's role in responding to climate change has received increased attention. A range of deliberate interventions to increase the carbon sequestration potential of marine environments has been proposed – termed ‘marine carbon dioxide removal’ (mCDR). Although such approaches co...

| description | In recent years, the ocean's role in responding to climate change has received increased attention. A range of deliberate interventions to increase the carbon sequestration potential of marine environments has been proposed – termed ‘marine carbon dioxide removal’ (mCDR). Although such approaches could help mitigate climate change, they may also pose new risks to the ocean. This chapter reflects on the rise of mCDR in climate policy discourse, presents critical governance dimensions at the ocean–climate nexus, analyses the suitability of the current ocean governance regime complex for equitable and just regulation of mCDR, and closes with an outlook for turning the identified weaknesses of the global ocean regime into an opportunity to ‘do it right’ by establishing a good governance approach to mCDR. |
