| description | Organizational control is fundamental to all forms of organizing but remains a vexing challenge for both theorists and practitioners. Recent developments in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML), however, represent a paradigm shift for organizations, in which agentic algorithms, or autosapiens, can assume the roles of both controllers and controllees. In this chapter, we explore this emerging landscape of AI-based organizational control and discuss combinations of humans and autosapiens as both controllers and controllees. For each of these combinations, we outline control configurations, challenges, as well as intended and unintended outcomes for individuals, teams, and organizations. We also discuss theoretical implications and sketch opportunities for future research on organizational control in 21st-century organizations. |
