| description | The Beginnings of Spanish Lexicography in the Americas offers a review of the earliest works that recorded the lexicon of the New World—from the conquest to the end of the 19th century—and lays the foundations for understanding the development of the rich Spanish-American lexicon. The volume forms part of the Lexicographical Treasury of Spanish in the Americas (TLEAM), a project aimed at recovering, cataloguing and making available to the public early repertoires, glossaries and dictionaries. The volume brings together a select group of specialists from most Spanish-speaking countries and offers a systematic analysis of historical background, chronological periods and typologies, alongside studies on specific countries and regions. Particular attention is paid both to emblematic works and to neglected compilations—appendices, lists and vocabularies by writers, travellers, missionaries, naturalists and merchants—and to the textual history of these repertoires. Furthermore, it examines the incorporation of American material into general and academic dictionaries and includes proposals for the critical edition and digitisation of the lexicographical heritage. An essential book for philologists, lexicographers and historians of language. |
