| description | In the historiography of Spanish-language literature, the term ‘postmodernism’ is usually used to refer to the poetry of the late modernist period and the transition from modernism to the avant-garde. It was introduced by Federico de Onís in his monumental *Antología de la poesía española e hispanoamericana, 1882–1932* (1934) and has been in constant use ever since by literary historians, who nevertheless agree that it is a particularly problematic label, referring to a chapter of Spanish-language poetry that is as interesting as it is underappreciated and understudied. The book Poéticas del postmodernismo en Hispanoamérica y España, 1907–1922 (Poetics of Postmodernism in Latin America and Spain, 1907–1922) refocuses attention on this concept, reflects on its relevance to a more nuanced, dynamic and plural understanding of literary modernity in Spanish, and brings together studies by twenty-six specialists on as many collections of poetry that illustrate the poetic continuities and changes between 1907, when the consolidation of modernism coincided with the first signs of its decline, and 1922, the year already proclaimed as the annus mirabilis of the avant-garde. |
