Summary:This book has two main objectives. Firstly, to examine the lives and experiences of women in order to uncover that other side of history—that knowledge emerging from the other shore, and from a different body of knowledge that has been floating on the waters of global historiography for several decades. Through eight chapters and seven case studies dedicated to women and their self-representations – ‘often distorted and stereotyped’ – based on various textual and visual sources, the book seeks to recognise and reconstruct their voices and faces as both objects of historical narratives and subjects of their own actions. As a second objective, this book adopts a Central European perspective, understood not as a historical category applicable to the early modern era, but as a contemporary intellectual tradition characterised by its (semi)peripheral and decentralised position, with specific historiographical approaches influenced by structuralism, Marxism and the comparative method.
