الملخص:Lives on hold: Masculinities, Empathy, and Nonviolence analyses the experiences of young people in Portuguese youth detention centres, connecting life trajectories marked by violence, poverty, and family breakdowns with the construction of rigid and unequal masculinities. Drawing on the X-MEN project, it combines quantitative and qualitative methods to explore gender identities, forms of violence, and aspirations for the future, while also integrating the perspectives of professionals working in highly hierarchical contexts. The book advocates for early, participatory, and transformative interventions grounded in care, empathy and the transformation of gender norms, as a way to break intergenerational cycles of violence and foster caring masculinities and more equitable relationships.
