description This monograph departs from traditional studies of national cinema by accentuating the intercultural and intertextual links between Malaysian films and Asian (as well as European and American) film practices. Using cross-cultural analysis, the author characterizes Malaysia as a pluralist society consisting of a multiplicity of cultural identities. Malaysian film reflects this remarkable heterogeneity, particularly evident in the impact of the Indian and Hong Kong cinema. Detailed analyses of a selection of Malaysian films highlight their cultural complexities, while noting the tension between cultural inclusivity and ethnic exclusivity at the heart of this cinema.

2021-02-10T12:58:18Z 2019-12-10 14:46:32 2020-04-01T15:33:43Z 2010-05-17 23:55 2019-12-10 14:46:32 2020-04-01T15:33:43Z 2010-12-31 23:55:55 2019-12-10 14:46:32 2020-04-01T15:33:43Z 2002 book 340243 OCN: 54479099 http://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/35103 9789053565803 https://directory.doabooks.org/handle/20.500.12854/26051 eng Film Culture in Transition open access image/jpeg image/jpeg image/jpeg image/jpeg image/jpeg n/a n/a n/a n/a n/a https://library.oapen.org/bitstream/20.500.12657/35103/1/340243.pdf https://library.oapen.org/bitstream/20.500.12657/35103/1/340243.pdf https://library.oapen.org/bitstream/20.500.12657/35103/1/340243.pdf https://library.oapen.org/bitstream/20.500.12657/35103/1/340243.pdf https://library.oapen.org/bitstream/20.500.12657/35103/1/340243.pdf Amsterdam University Press 10.5117/9789053565803 10.5117/9789053565803 de2ecbe7-1037-4e96-8c3a-5a842d921e04 9789053565803 336 open access
