Armut und Bettel waren auch in der Vergangenheit ein Teil des Wiener Stadtbilds. Zwischen 1443 und 1693 durften nur die mit einem Bettelzeichen („Stadtzeichen“) versehenen „StadtzeichnerInnen“ offiziell betteln.
