Over the course of a year the seasonal changes inspired Van Gogh to paint a cycle of this wheat field, thereby seeing it as an allegorical representation of the fate of human life, which comforted him. Ein paar Wochen, bevor van Gogh sich im Frühjahr 1889 in eine Nervenklinik in Saint-Rémy einwies, hatte er an Gauguin geschrieben, dass er eine "Kunst des Trostes für zerrissene Herzen" schaffen wollte. Vom Fenster seines Schlafzimmers in der Klinik blickte er auf ein ummauertes Kornfeld herab.
