Der pictorial turn, der seit der Mitte der 1990er Jahre die Geistes-, Kultur-, Religions- und Sozialwissenschaften beeinflusst, hat in seiner Theoriebildung bislang eine primär auf die westliche Welt bezogene Perspektive eingenommen. Es ist eines der Ziele des Buchs, die Theoriebildung aus einem anderen Blickwinkel – dem des Balkans und des Nahen Ostens – zu erweitern.
