Der Ausgangspunkt der Arbeit ist ein auch auf Bachtin zurückgreifendes Verständnis des Satzes als "Hybride aus Satz und Äusserung", aus referentiellen Größen und pragmatischer Einbettung. Verbunden ist dies mit der Auffassung, daß Sprachwissen aus autonomen, angeborenen (Teil-)Kompetenzen. und erworbenen Fähigkeiten besteht und diese mit anderen Wissenssystemen interagieren. Folgerichtig wird die Forderung nach einem linguistischen Paradigma erhoben, das Ererbtes und Erlerntes sinnvoll zu integrieren vermag. Der Verfasser sieht seine Arbeit als einen ersten, "sicher recht holperigen Versuch (...) in dieser Richtung". Damit reiht sich diese Arbeit ein in den aktuellen Versuch, die starren Grenzen einer allzu nativistisch verstandenen Generativistik zu überschreiten.
