description State regulation of labour migration is confronted with a double paradox. First, while markets require a policy of open borders to fulfill demands for migrant workers, the boundaries of citizenship impose some degree of closure to the outside. Second, while the exclusivity of citizenship requires closed membership, civil and human rights undermine the state's capacity to exclude foreigners once they are in the country. By considering how Malaysia and Spain have responded to the demand for foreign labour, this book analyses what may be identified as the trilemma between markets, citizenship and rights. For though their markets are similar, the two countries have different approaches to citizenship and rights. We must thus ask: how do such divergences affect state responses to market demands and how, in turn, do state regulations impact labour migration flows? And what does this mean for contemporary migration overall?

And what does this mean for contemporary migration overall? 2021-02-10T12:58:18Z 2012-12-31 23:55:55 2019-12-10 14:46:32 2020-04-01T15:19:27Z 2012 book 416050 OCN: 782878258 http://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/34537 https://directory.doabooks.org/handle/20.500.12854/28132 eng open access image/jpeg image/jpeg image/jpeg image/jpeg image/jpeg n/a n/a n/a n/a n/a https://library.oapen.org/bitstream/20.500.12657/34537/1/416050.pdf https://library.oapen.org/bitstream/20.500.12657/34537/1/416050.pdf https://library.oapen.org/bitstream/20.500.12657/34537/1/416050.pdf https://library.oapen.org/bitstream/20.500.12657/34537/1/416050.pdf https://library.oapen.org/bitstream/20.500.12657/34537/1/416050.pdf Amsterdam University Press 10.26530/OAPEN_416050 10.26530/OAPEN_416050 de2ecbe7-1037-4e96-8c3a-5a842d921e04 260 open access
