L'avvento e la diffusione di Internet e del Web hanno radicalmente trasformato le modalità di comunicazione. Questo libro considera un ambito particolare della comunicazione in rete: quello relativo alla scienza. L'autrice dapprima ricostruisce le circostanze in cui hanno avuto origine il sistema moderno di comunicazione scientifica e gli strumenti qualitativi e quantitativi di valutazione della scienza. L'analisi si concentra poi sulla storia, la filosofia e l'architettura del Web dalla nascita fino alle più recenti evoluzioni tecniche (Web semantico) e socio-culturali (Web 2.0).
