Fra i canali d'espressione dell'uomo il più ricco è forse la musica, che permette di esprimere le proprie emozioni – in un continuum che va dalla gioia al dolore, dalla esaltazione alla depressione – in modi socialmente e culturalmente accessibili e accettabili. Il volume affronta, dal punto di vista della scienza cognitiva, gli aspetti coinvolti sia nel produrre che ascoltare musica. Questi argomenti, che possono sembrare di non facile comprensione ai non specialisti, sono affrontati con un linguaggio chiaro e accessibile.
