Die vorliegende Untersuchung ist unmittelbar aus der etymologischen Praxis erwachsen und der traditionellen historisch-vergleichenden etymologischen Methode verpflichtet. Darüberhinaus steht sie im wissenschaftlichen Kontext der Richtungen, die die slavische Mythologie als Untersuchungsgegenstand der Sprachwissenschaft betrachten, vor allem der Tartuer und Moskauer Schule und der russischen und polnischen Ethnolinguistik. Sie bearbeitet teilweise schwer zugängliches dialektales Material aus einer relativ wenig untersuchten Region der Slavia und schlägt eine Reihe neuer etymologischer Lösungen vor.
