Der rezeptionsgeschichtliche ¼Urknall½ von Richard Wagners Werk fand bezeichnenderweise an einem Ort statt, der sich in einem Spannungsfeld zwischen Provinz und Residenz, Tradition und Fortschritt, Idee und Verwirklichung befand: im Großherzogtum Sachsen-Weimar-Eisenach. Hier verbanden sich Franz Liszts auf die Zukunft ausgerichtetes Wirken und das Erbe der Weimarer Klassik unter der Regentschaft eines ambitionierten Weimarer Hofes zu einer nicht unproblematischen Synthese, von deren Folgen auch Wagner nicht unberührt blieb.
