Der vorliegende Sammelband ist aus der Arbeit der gleichnamigen Arbeitsgruppe "Entwicklungen in slavischen Sprachen" (E1SS) hervorgegangen. Diese Arbeitsgruppe, der "ElSS-Salon", wurde im Oktober 1995 gegründet. Ausgehend von den allgemeinen Grundannahmen, dass die Struktur sprachlicher Kategorien 1. durch die kognitive Verarbeitung der Wirklichkeit, 2. durch die kommunikative Funktion der Äußerungen und 3. durch ihre Entwicklung zu erklären ist, setzt man sich die gemeinsame Beschäftigung mit der Rekonstruktion von sprachlichen Entwicklungen, mit deren Beschreibungsmöglichkeiten, Regularitäten und Erklärungen zum Ziel. Unter Entwicklung ist dabei sowohl Diachronie als auch Ontogenese zu verstehen, als deren Basis dieselben Prinzipien angenommen werden können.
