| description | In many senses, viewers have cut their teeth on the violence in American cinema: from Anthony Perkins slashing Janet Leigh in the most infamous of shower scenes; to the 1970s masterpieces of Martin Scorsese, Sam Peckinpah and Francis Ford Coppola; to our present-day undertakings in imagining global annihilations through terrorism, war, and alien grudges. Transfigurations brings our cultural obsession with film violence into a renewed dialogue with contemporary theory. Grønstad argues that the use of violence in Hollywood films should be understood semiotically rather than viewed realistically; Tranfigurations thus alters both our methodology of reading violence in films and the meanings we assign to them, depicting violence not as a self-contained incident, but as a convoluted network of our own cultural ideologies and beliefs. |

2021-02-10T12:58:18Z 2010-12-31 23:55:55 2019-12-10 14:46:32 2020-04-01T15:38:00Z 2008 book 340041 OCN: 503446407 http://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/35288 9789089640109 https://directory.doabooks.org/handle/20.500.12854/34298 eng Film Culture in Transition open access image/jpeg image/jpeg image/jpeg image/jpeg n/a n/a n/a n/a https://library.oapen.org/bitstream/20.500.12657/35288/1/340041.pdf https://library.oapen.org/bitstream/20.500.12657/35288/1/340041.pdf https://library.oapen.org/bitstream/20.500.12657/35288/1/340041.pdf https://library.oapen.org/bitstream/20.500.12657/35288/1/340041.pdf Amsterdam University Press 10.5117/9789089640109 10.5117/9789089640109 de2ecbe7-1037-4e96-8c3a-5a842d921e04 9789089640109 288 open access |
