Diese Arbeit ist aus einer (scheinbar) einfachen Frage entstanden, zugleich aber versucht sie, ein allgemeines Problem zu erörtern. Die Frage lautet: Wo spielt sich eigentlich die Handlung der "Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre" ab? Ist es eine "wirkliche" Welt, eine Welt also, die wir "sonst auch kennen" oder - angesichts des zeitlichen Abstandes, der uns von dieser Welt trennt - die wir auch mit anderen, nicht literarischen, auf jeden Fall außerhalb des Werkes selbstliegenden Mitteln (etwa mit Hilfe der historischen Forschung) uns erschließen können? Können wir noch von einer "Wirklichkeit an sich" überhaupt reden? Oder ist sie uns fragwürdig geworden? Oder sehen wir darin eben nur einen - Begriff?
