Der Teilnehmerkreis der Basler Lesegesellschaft des langen 19. Jahrhunderts ist dem soziokulturellen Bürgertum zugeordnet. Die Studie biographiert diese bürgerliche Gruppe: Ihr Wandel wird beobachtet und vor dem Hintergrund der Vereinsgeschichte der Lesegesellschaft und des lokalen historischen Kontextes interpretiert.
