Im 18. Jahrhundert waren die Fürstenhöfe neben den Kirchen die wichtigsten Träger des Musiklebens. Gemessen an der Bedeutung der Hofkapellen ist ihre Geschichte nur unzureichend erforscht. Es liegt zwar eine ganze Reihe von Spezialuntersuchungen zu einzelnen Höfen vor, doch fehlen nach wie vor vergleichende Untersuchungen.
