The effects of the transformation process are also elaborated. Die Rolle der Gewerkschaften im Prozess der deutschen Einheit fand bislang wenig Beachtung. Dabei gehörten sie von Anfang an zu den Kräften, die die gesellschaftliche und wirtschaftliche Transformation Ostdeutschlands mitgestalteten. In den Beiträgen des Bandes betrachten Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler sowie ehemals Aktive aus Ost und West – ausgehend von ihren jeweils unterschiedlichen Perspektiven – die Möglichkeiten, Erfolge und Grenzen gewerkschaftlicher Politik und gewerkschaftlichen Handelns. Im Fokus stehen gewerkschaftliche Kontakte vor 1989, die Phasen von Umbruch und Vereinigung, die Arbeit der Treuhandanstalt und die Tarifpolitik.
