Nach 1918 musste sich Deutschland politisch und sozial neu definieren, aber sich auch als Land, als geographische und kulturelle Einheit neu entdecken. Es setzte ein Prozess ein, den man mit einem Begriff der Zeit als „Innere Kolonisation“ bezeichnen kann. Zur Kompensation der vielen Verluste machten sich Wissenschaftler und Künstler daran, jene Dimension, die in Frankreich „la France profonde“ heißt, zu erschließen, das „innere“ Deutschland also, seine einzigartige Kulturdichte. Die Ökonomie des Sparenmüssens wurde zur Überflusswirtschaft der geistigen und materiellen Reichtümer konvertiert.
