Knjiga, ki je izšla ob petdesetletnici Geografskega inštituta Antona Melika, predstavlja nastanek in razvoj inštituta ter glavne značilnosti raziskovalnega dela na inštitutu po posameznih obdobjih. Inštitut, ki je od leta 1981 sestavni del Znanstvenoraziskovalnega centra Slovenske akademije znanosti in umetnosti, ima oddelke za geoekologijo, regionalno geografijo, naravne nesreče, geografski informacijski sistem in tematsko kartografijo, knjižnico, geografske zbirke in kartografsko zbirko ter sedež Komisije za standardizacijo zemljepisnih imen Vlade Republike Slovenije.
