Jahrhundert sind als theaterpraktische Texte anzusehen, die auf das Unterhaltungsbedürfnis einer Großstadt ausgerichtet waren. Begrenzte sich ihre Lektüre bisher auf die komische Bearbeitung einer prominenten Vorlage, so lassen sich an den Stücken die Produktionsbedingungen ihrer Autoren an den gewinnorientierten Privattheatern in sozioökonomischen Krisenzeiten aufzeigen.
