Das erste Sonderheft der Zeitschrift Debatte versammelt Beiträge und Repliken zur Erwachsenenbildung, die einen Perspektivwechsel zur Diskussion stellen: Während Optimierung häufig als Lösung für erziehungswissenschaftliche Problemstellungen eingesetzt wird, lenkt das Sonderheft den Fokus auf Problematisierung. Denn Optimierung setzt implizit ein bereits definiertes Ziel voraus, während die Problematisierung eine Offenheit gegenüber ihrem Gegenstand erlaubt.
