Using a broad spectrum of cinematic artefacts and historical materials, the book examines the first decade of narrative cinema, 1908-1918 in the late Tsarist Empire, how cinema specifically modeled cinematic concepts of physicality and thus significantly the idea of the human being in Russian modernity, a cultural culture characterized by transmediality Epoch, co-designed. Accordingly, in the study, practices from theater and dance as well as cultural, artistic and literary discourses, such as from the avant-garde or symbolism, are intertwined with developments in film aesthetics and film theory. |

Mit seinen neuen medialen Möglichkeiten brachte der Film zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts eine gesteigerte Intensität in die Wahrnehmung von Körperrepräsentationen. Er zeigte den Körper nun in einer ästhetischen Spannung von Authentizität, Verfremdung, Fetischisierung und Flüchtigkeit und schuf zugleich mediale und ästhetische Konstellationen, an die sich zahlreiche (theoretische) Überlegungen und künstlerische Artikulationen einer krisenhaften Moderne banden. Visionen von einem Neuen Menschen – insbesondere einer Neuen Frau – waren allgegenwärtig. Anhand eines breiten Spektrums filmischer Artefakte und historischer Materialien untersucht das Buch zur ersten Dekade des Erzählkinos, 1908-1918 im ausgehenden Zarenreich, wie das Kino spezifisch filmische Konzepte von Körperlichkeit modellierte und somit maßgeblich die Vorstellung vom Menschen in der russischen Moderne, einer transmedial geprägten kulturellen Epoche, mitgestaltete.
