| Summary: | The past is fundamental to the construction of the present: that is why its uses, far from being unique and constant over time, change according to dynamics and needs aimed at supporting different visions and projects. Through various contributions, which intersect the concepts of "places of memory" and "cultural heritage," the volume aims to historicize the processes through which specific aspects of the past have been and are being used (reconstructed, valorized, commemorated, neglected, and touristized) in contemporary Europe, with a view to building the sense of belonging of different communities. From this perspective, the uses of the Austrian past, the history of Jewish communities in Central Europe, that of the twentieth-century revolutions in contemporary Sardinia, the visual memory of the Soviet Union, and the monumentalization of colonialism and the Savoy monarchy are reconstructed. |
