Beskrivelse
Summary:The topic of the book is an analysis of the incidence and characteristics of Gothicism in the ballad. These issues were previously only addressed in a general way in Polish literary studies, mostly as part of discussions on other themes relating to the functioning and character of the horror aesthetic and the uncanny in Poland, and as part of theoretical musings on ballad stories as a genre. The result of this analysis is the suggestion to incorporate the term ‘gothic ballad’ into Polish literary studies. The term was used to refer to a selection of texts of a ballad character, written at the turn of the eighteenth and nineteenth century. The group of texts under discussion is inherently non-homogenous, as it consists of ballads, dumas, patriotic songs, elegies, and works of a reflective, contemplative nature. The incorporation of all of the aforementioned genres into one category was justified by referring to the critical-genealogical awareness of the turn of the century.
